Desmaizayatri
Indonesian English teacher receives Professor Jack Richards scholarship to enter the Diploma in Applied Linguistics Program at the Regional Language Centre, Singapore, July to December 2007.
My name is Desmaizayatri, but my friends call me Thilly. I was born in Padang, the capital city of West Sumatra Province, Indonesia. I have been teaching English for about 5 years. I taught English for individual when I was at 2nd year of university. Shortly after I graduated from my university- Andalas University Padang- I taught English for senior high school students as well as university students in Batam. Later than I realize that I like teaching English very much. At the present, I am teaching English especially grammar and speaking. To me, learning language is interesting, however, sharing something interesting is more exciting.
Furthermore, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Professor Jack C. Richards whose scholarship will enable me to improve my English teaching quality. Hopefully I can complete the RELC Diploma in Applied Linguistics at RELC, Singapore, in 2007, so that I can share the knowledge with my colleagues in my country to improve our English teaching quality.
Ao Ran
Mr. Ao Ran, a young teacher/scholar from China and a former student of Professor Richards, has been awarded a scholarship to complete his PhD in applied linguistics at the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He writes:
My name is Ao Ran. I was born in the southwest of China. I’ve been teaching extensively in China and Singapore. My teaching mainly involves linguistics, reading, pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, etc. I also enjoy doing research on TEFL, e.g. English language teaching skills, teaching English pronunciation, and computer-assisted language teaching. I’m currently doing my PhD at National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. To me, language is the most engrossing thing in the world. After more than a decade of learning and teaching it, I still have a lot more to learn. I got my Master’s Degree from RELC, Singapore. PhD has always been my life dream.
Besides linguistics and English language teaching, I have a few hobbies without which my life would be a bit boring. Music has been my favorite hobby for most of my life. I simply cannot ignore music such as classical, folk, country, jazz and blues. I used to play folk guitar, but now I’ve started playing Spanish guitar when I have time to spare. In my book, music is not only a way of effective relaxation, but more importantly, an invaluable source of inspiration. Language itself is actually an intriguing form of music. So isn’t it a splendid thing to devote my whole lifetime to these different forms of music. I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to Professor Jack C. Richards whose scholarship has fulfilled my life dream.
