Summer concerts at Tiromoana 2007/2008
A series of 6 concerts were held at Dr. Richards’ New Zealand summer house – Tiromoana – in support of the Gisborne Music Competition, an annual competition held in Gisborne for young musicians, which attracts competitors from New Zealand and Australia, as well as other parts of the word.
The summer concert series opened with a concert on December 8th by violinist Mark Menzies, who was one of the jurors at the Gisborne Music Competition and who is violin professor at the California Institute of Arts. He performed a selection of works by contemporary composers for the violin.
On December 18th, London based New Zealand soprano Madeleine Pierard returned to Tiromoana with Bruce Greenfield as accompanist, to delight a packed house of 70 with a selection of operatic and vocal favourites. Dr. Richards is supporting Madeleine’s vocal studies in London in 2008.
On January 5, Gisborne music student Paul Romero gave a recital to another packed house, playing a selection that ranged from Bach to Lilburn. Paul continues his studies at Victoria University in 2008, with support from Dr. Richards.
On January 12, Auckland pianist David Guerin gave a masterful performance of Bach’s famous Goldberg variations.
On February 2 the New Zealand String Quartet performed pieces by Schubert, Ravel and New Zealand composer Ross Harris. Ross Harris was also present at the concert and introduced the pieces that the Quartet played.
The summer series ended with a recital by New Zealand soprano Margaret Medlyn, accompanied by Bruce Greenfield. This was a chance for Gisborne music lovers to experience one of New Zealand’s true Divas at the height of her powers.
Previous concert series were held in 2005-2006 and 2006-2007. |
