summer concerts at tiromoana
Recent summer concerts at Dr Richards’ New Zealand house –Tiromoana- have been in support of a project to purchase a harpsichord for the Gisborne Music Society. Funds raised by the concerts together with a substantial grant from Dr. Richards and Moon Won Gyu enabled the purchase of a harpsichord in January 2006. An inaugural concert was held in January in St Andrews church to celebrate the purchase of the harpsichord, featuring Wellington musician Douglas Mews. Mews also performed Bach’s toccata and fugue as a tribute to Jack Richards, on the organ in the church which was built by George Croft, grandfather of Jack Richards.
Please see a Gisborne Herald article on the concerts here.
Three summer concerts were held at Tiromoana during the summer of 2006. These concerts were to raise funds for the Gisborne Music Competitions, an annual competition for solo orchestral instruments, that attracts young musicians from New Zealand and abroad.
The first concert featured an outstanding young virtuoso pianist from Australia, Ambre Hammond, who thrilled audiences over two performances of music from the romantic period, including List and Chopin.
The second concert featured Chinese-born pianist and composer Gao Ping, who played the 24 Shostakovich preludes as well as music by Poulenc. He also delighted a packed house with some of his own compositions.
2005 Lexus song competition winner Madeleine
Pierard was scheduled to sing at the 3rd summer concert on Feb 18th but due
to a severe case of food poisoning was unable to sing. Fortunately
Madeleine's voice teacher, Jenny Wollerman, herself a distinguished New
Zealand soprano and a regular performer on the New Zealand concert and opera
stage, was able to fly to Gisborne on the afternoon of the concert to
perform with Bruce Greenfield. She thrilled a packed house with a repeat
performance of a concert she and Bruce had given at the International
Festival of the Arts in 2004. |
