During the New Zealand summer, Jack Richards sponsors a series of house concerts at his New Zealand home, to raise funds for the Gisborne International Music Competition, an annual competition for orchestral players. The competition is now in its 26th year and attracts some 60 young competitors every year from New Zealand, Australia and further afield.
Tiromoana Summer Music Series 2016/2017
We have planned a series of five exciting concerts this summer featuring both emerging as well as established artists together with New Zealand as well as international musicians. The latter category will be a concert in February of four-hands piano music, performed by distinguished Chilean/Swiss pianist Edith Fischer and her husband, the Argentinean pianist-composer Jorge Pepi-Alos. This will be their first visit to the country and they will play their New Zealand recital debut in Tiromoana. Please marks the dates below in your calendar. We begin the summer series on Wednesday December 28th with a post-Christmas joint recital by Christchurch wunderkind Lixin – the leading pianist of his age in New Zealand –together with Sydney bassoonist Long Ngyuen. The program will consist of:
- Sonata in C major, Op. 2 No. 3 – Ludwig van Beethoven
- The Lark – Mikhail Glinka (transcribed by Balakirev)
- Andante Spianato et Grande Polonaise Brillante in E-flat major op. 22 – Frederic Chopin
Long Ngyuen’s program:
- 3 Romances, op.94 for Bassoon and Piano (arr. Martin Gatt) by Robert Schumann.
- Concertino in Bb major, Opus 12 for Bassoon and Piano by Ferdinand David.
- 1st and 2nd Movement from Five Pieces in Folk Style opus 102 by Robert Schumann.
- Bassoon Concerto in C major RV472 by Antonia Vivaldi.
January 18 2017
Our second concert will be a mid-week piano recital by an outstanding young New Zealand pianist Jun Buterey-Ishido, who is based in Germany. He will perform Beethoven – the sonatas op.31 no.3 and op.111, as well as Eroica Variations – and a selection from Bartok’s Microcosmos.
January 29 2017
Our third concert with be on Sunday January 29 and will feature two rising opera singers from the New Zealand School of Music together – soprano Pasquale Orchard and tenor Joseph Haddow, with associate artist Bruce Greenfield, who will perform a selection of favorite arias from both opera and musical theater.
February 11 2017
Our fourth concert takes place on Saturday the 11th of February and will be a performance of all three Brahms Sonatas for piano and violin, played by Sydney based Fox Chen (violin) and Tony Lin (piano). Fox was an audience favorite when he played in previous years at the Gisborne International Music Competition. Germany-based Tony Lin recently completed a national tour with Chamber Music New Zealand, where he received rave reviews. This will be a rare occasion to hear these three exquisite works together in one evening.

Our final concert will be a gala event to conclude the summer series featuring work for four hands performed by Chilean pianiist Edith Fischer and the Argentinean Jorge Pepi-Alos. Their program is:
